Budapest & Around

We spend three days in Budapest right around Easter. This city rivals some of the greatest cities in Europe. There is so much to do and see that we wished we had a few extra days to cover it all. We purchased a 72 hour metro pass and navigated the network with ease. I loved the old trains and metro stations on the M1 decorated with white tile, heavy metal columns and old wooden booths.

Soon after our arrival we visited the House of Terror,  a museum dedicated to victims of the holocaust and the communist regime. We were tired and jet lagged from our trip and the dark testimonials completely wiped us out. We found our way to Vorosmarty Square and stumbled upon an Easter Market with food and souvenir stalls and tried Hungarian chimney doughnuts. For my first dinner in Budapest, I had Hungarian goulash, a hearty soup with meat and vegetables. Delicious!

On our second day we took the train to Szentendre, 40 minutes outside of Budapest. Such a charming little town! The houses are painted in bright colours and beautiful details ornate the exterior murals and doors. A great place for walking around and visiting the local artisan shops.

We travelled back to Budapest and made our way to Buda to visit Castle Hill. The hill houses incredible landmarks and offers spectacular views of Pest and the overwhelming Parliament building. St Matthias church is like something I’ve never seen before. The colourful diamond pattern roof tiles make it unique among gothic churches.

We walked over the Chain Bridge to get back to Pest.

Our last day started with breakfast at the New York Cafe, one of Budapest’s several historical cafes. These places are jaw dropping in their extravagance and the prices are matched accordingly.

We spent the rest of the day in Pest and did a walking tour of Leopold Town starting with the Parliament building.

Next we visited St Istvan Basilica and headed towards Zrinyi Utca and Vaci Utca. We finished the evening with dinner at Lugas and walked along the Danube for a night view of Castle Hill and Chain Bridge.
